WinZip Quick Guide

WinZip utility is an archiver which is owned by Corel Corporation. It has an easy to use user interface with all capabilities of console ZIP utility and more.

You can download WinZip installation from WinZip.com. WinZip is available for Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android.

After downloading WinZip installation package launch it and follow the installation instructions. Once WinZip is installed you should see multiple additional options in your Windows Explorer or Finder apps.

For example, in Finder app when you do a Right mouse click or Ctrl-Mouse Click on a file with ZIP file extension you will see a menu like the one above. If you click on “Open With” you should see WinZip as your first choice to open the file. When you click on “WinZip.app” you will see a WinZip application window open and your file will open in it. WinZip will immediately scan the file, read the list of files and folders from it and display it. You can also open ZIP file in WinZip by double clicking on it.

In order to extract an opened ZIP file from WinZip you should go to Action menu and select “Unzip to My Mac…” or “Unzip to Cloud” options. You can either unzip all files or only ones you select. To unzip only selected files, select files that you want to unzip and select “Action->Unzip to My Mac…” from the menu.

If you want to create a new Zip file and add files to it, you should launch a WinZip application and select “File->New Zip File…” from the menu. You will see a new window with a blank space with gray note “Empty Zip File” in it. You can drag and drop files to this space either from your Finder window or you can also navigate your storage via the right side of WinZip window. When you click on your hard drive or a favorite folder on the left navigation pane you will see its contents open with all the files displayed. Drag and drop files that you want to add to archive from the left side of the window to the right as shown below.

You can also check “Encrypt” checkbox on the right to encrypt the files. In this case when you add first file to the ZIP archive WinZip will ask you to enter a password for an archive. Make sure to choose a hard to guess password or better use automatic password generator. Long and complex password make it harder to use brute-force attacks against the archive.
